The Mayor's Committee brunch drew about 200 people to talk hiring workers with disabilities

If you know a business that's hiring, this one's for you. The SCV held its annual brunch for National Disability Employment Awareness Month, with the theme "Celebrating Value and Talent." Employers, nonprofit organizers and entrepreneurs came to eat, network and buy from tables run by young adults with disabilities.

About 200people attended the Mayor's Committee brunch

Employers, nonprofit organizers and entrepreneurs were among them.

“It doesn't need to be Employment Awareness Month. It needs to be Employment Action Month because we have an amazing population of folks who are out there looking for jobs.”

Tony Pennay, Senior Vice President of Strategic Growth for New Horizons

Carmen Bowen told the crowd she hired her intern, Jacob Nakashima, after attending last year's brunch. She said he spotted problems that needed fixing that day. Mayor Laurene Weste said she started the committee in 2001 and "we started with a handful of people, with a dream."

  • When: Thursday, Oct. 29
  • Where: Canyon Country Community Center
  • Coffee: Grizzlies Cafecito, run by Golden Valley High students
  • Size: the committee's largest brunch presentation

What can be done for sweet Cubby?

“Cubby needs a HERO! Let’s not fail this boy! DO NOT pass by his kennel because he is jumping like a nut or he looks depressed. Ask to see him in the yard. We think he is getting passed by due to his in-kennel-behavior. That is not fair to Cubby. He is a sweetheart in the yard and quickly became a favorite, not only at…”

The Wrap

Cowboys and film crews once roamed a 1,700-acre adobe ranch at the mouth of San Francisquito Canyon, home to Western film pioneer Harry Carey. On Nov. 3, 2005, Los Angeles County dedicated part of it as Tesoro Adobe Historic Park. The adobe is built of earth, clay, and straw. Old Hollywood, right in our backyard.
