  • Santa Clarita will host a community fire safety meeting on July 10 in partnership with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Terra-gen, operator of a battery energy storage facility near Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway—officials will review fire safety plans for the facility.  SCVNews.com

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A heavy equipment operator accidentally ruptured a 3/4 inch gas main on Sierra Highway near Skyline Ranch Road around 10:15 p.m. Monday near the Backwoods Inn in Canyon Country—firefighters and SoCal Gas quickly shut off the line and no injuries were reported.  Hometown Station
  • L.A. County Fire Department officials are battling a 40-acre fire near northbound I-5 by Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic and have coordinated a second-alarm response while requesting fixed-wing aircraft after reports came in just before 2 p.m.—officials warn the blaze could expand to 100 acres in the next two hours and is severely impacting northbound traffic.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

CRIME NEWS

  • On Tuesday around 1 p.m.—a stolen car struck a deputy’s patrol car on Newhall Avenue near Sierra Highway before the driver fled on foot—and officials later confirmed the vehicle was stolen and the suspect remained at large.  Hometown Station

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Young athletes from across Santa Clarita join The Master’s University summer camp in Placerita Canyon to learn sports such as baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball and track. Local coaches and college athletes lead daily drills and competitions as the camp hosts between 80 and 130 campers (ages 6-14) each week.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Santa Clarita City Council voted 3-2 on Tuesday to remove Denise Lite from her role as planning commissioner after Mayor Pro Tem Laurene Weste requested her resignation due to communication issues—most residents and local officials opposed the move, with 22 of 29 public comment cards supporting her retention. Lite denied the allegations, saying she only raised questions to promote transparency in council decisions.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved Sarah Mahin as the first director of the new Department of Homeless Services and Housing — the county is centralizing its homelessness and housing services. Mahin, who oversaw a $875 million budget as Director of Housing for Health over the past six years — will lead community meetings as the county realigns these services.  SCVNews.com
  • Denise Lite was removed from the Planning Commission on Tuesday night by a 3—2 City Council vote after Mayor Pro Tem Laurene Weste said she did not communicate well, and she later announced her run for City Council.
