COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On November 18th, 1957, Santa Clarita’s Newhall Branch of the Los Angeles County Public Library opened at 22704 9th Street with a flag-raising and speeches by Judge C.M. MacDougall, Paul Palmer, and Supervisor Warren M. Dorn—doubling its book collection and naming Mrs. Rose Buddell as the new librarian. This event marked a major shift from the small library spaces used since 1916.  Hometown Station
  • Santa Clarita residents will soon experience Enchant, the world’s largest Christmas light maze at Santa Anita Park from Nov. 21 through Dec. 28, as the event transforms over 10 acres into a maze, ice-skating trail, and festive village with live music and artisan vendors offering seasonal entertainment (tickets range from $10 to $40) (organizers have planned theme nights for extra holiday fun).  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • West Ranch band dads Jim Forrest and Jonathan Gallaway spent the summer building large props for the marching band show Red, a fresh retelling of Little Red Riding Hood praised for its clear story—especially the moveable wolf face and detailed Grandma’s house. Their work has boosted the band's high scores as they prepare for the upcoming Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association Championships.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • The Santa Clarita Film Office listed nine productions filming in the Valley from November 17 to November 22 — including TV series S.W.A.T. Exiles and NCIS, a Toyota commercial, and a tech start-up ad.  Hometown Station

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gary Cusumano, retired chairman of Newhall Land, met with culinary students on November 18 to thank them for his $1M gift that will create a new scholarship and rename a culinary building. The Santa Clarita Community College District board approved the donation during a special meeting—students and staff felt encouraged by his support.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • SCVi Charter School hosted an Aerospace Learning Showcase last Friday where fourth and fifth graders and other students presented their handmade model jets built with Play-Doh and 3D-printed parts to parents, teachers, and Rep. George Whitesides. Teacher Crystal Norris Van Lingen said the project helped students learn and take ownership of their work—boosting their confidence and encouraging teamwork.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SCV Water is asking customers to pause all outdoor water use from December 14 to 22 because scheduled repairs at Castaic Lake will close the connection for imported water. The agency will use local groundwater & water stored in reservoirs to ensure indoor needs are met.  Hometown Station
  • The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved the Entrada South / Valencia Commerce Center project on November 18, which will add over 1,574 multi-family units—including 188 affordable units—and more than 4 million square feet of space expected to create 10,000 jobs. Developer Newhall Land and Farming Company committed up to $62 million for The Old Road improvements while the plan also features fire-resilient homes, new trails and a 5.4-acre park.  Hometown Station

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Los County Department of Animal Care and Control warns pet owners to keep their pets indoors during cold weather to prevent hypothermia and frostbite—owners are advised to limit outdoor time and provide a warm, dry shelter. The department stresses the importance of monitoring pets for signs of discomfort such as shivering or whining.  SCVNews.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • College of the Canyons women’s soccer finished the regular season as co-champions of the Western State Conference South Division under coach Justin Lundin and is headed to the postseason for the 14th consecutive season—today the tournament gets underway and they will host a playoff match at 5 p.m. on November 22. General admission costs are $12 for adults and $8 for seniors over 60 and children under 12.  SCVNews.com
  • College of the Canyons men’s basketball lost 82–81 to Chaffey College at Lee Smelser Court on November 15 when a last-second play gave the Panthers the win—Canyons had led by 17 points early and their scoring stalled—and they will face Long Beach City College again today at 5 p.m.  SCVNews.com
  • On November 16, the Lady Mustangs beat Alaska Fairbanks 104–72 in the Northstar Classic final — their offense and defense led to a strong win with Alli VanKooten scoring 30 points. The team improved to 3–3 and will face the College of Idaho on November 21 — a game that will test their momentum going forward.  SCVNews.com
  • The Master’s University women's volleyball team, seeded (No. 14), will host the Texas A&M-Texarkana Eagles in the opening round of the NAIA Women's Volleyball Championship on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m.  SCVNews.com
  • Valencia High School's baseball booster club will host its first Grand Slam Alumni Dinner from 6–10 p.m. on Nov 28 at the Valencia Country Club to support the baseball program and honor past players— the dinner will take place the day before the annual alumni game scheduled for Nov 29.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
