  • Santa Clarita City Council will host Light Up Main Street on Nov. 15 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Old Town Newhall—residents will enjoy a countdown and tree lighting at 5:30 p.m., live performances, interactive activities, and food vendors that support local businesses as the holiday season begins.  SCVNews.com
  • Santa Clarita’s Boys & Girls Club will host its Festival of Trees from Nov. 21 to Nov. 23 at the Canyon Country Community Center, celebrating 23 years of holiday magic with decorated trees, auctions, and live entertainment that supports local youth programs. The event includes Senior Day on Nov. 21, a Magic of the Lights Gala later that day, and community days on Nov. 22 and Nov. 23 with a visit from Santa Claus.  SCVNews.com
  • In the late '70s, Acton residents staged a playful 'Turkey War' after radio DJ Sweet Dick Whittington mocked the town with his 'Where the hell is Acton?' remark. Over 200 visitors joined his live broadcast and about 400 locals marched in costume—following humorous victory demands like restoring a missing letter on town signs while a local band played a reworked anthem.  Hometown Station
  • Family Promise of Santa Clarita Valley launched a campaign to help families hurt by reduced SNAP benefits from the federal government shutdown—asking for donations to cover a full Thanksgiving dinner and one night of safe shelter with a hotel voucher.   • Santa Clarita Valley Harmony Hills All-Voice Chorus will present its Christmas Dreams Radio Show at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 22 at the Santa Clarita Valley Elks Lodge (tickets are available) (for local residents).  SCVNews.com
  • TMU alums Gabriela Holland ’24 and Catalina Sonnenburg ’23 were hired at Sight — Sound, a Christian theater company in Branson where they put their TMU Theatre Arts skills to work. Holland joined the hair and makeup team while Sonnenburg started as a costume shop assistant, fulfilling their dream to create art for the glory of God.  Hometown Station

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from the College of the Canyons Society of Physics and Engineering launched a high altitude balloon that carried a scientific payload featuring a custom sampler for collecting stratospheric microorganisms. The interdisciplinary project united students from physics, engineering and life sciences — and the group plans additional launches to refine the design in the coming months.  Hometown Station
  • At the Hart District board meeting on Wednesday, teacher leader Ron Ippolito challenged trustees to visit 100 classrooms in 100 days to gather feedback from staff and boost morale+ board President Cherise Moore immediately accepted the challenge. The board also unanimously voted to rename West Ranch High School's baseball field after longtime coach Casey Burrell, who won more than 250 games+ led the Wildcats to a CIF Division II championship.  Hometown Station
  • Edison International is now accepting applications for the Edison Scholars program, which will offer a $50,000 scholarship over four years to 30 high school seniors in Southern California Edison’s service area who plan to study STEM and meet a minimum 3.0 GPA. Applicants must submit their applications by Jan. 22 (deadline) and will have an opportunity to apply for a paid summer internship after their first college year.  SCVNews.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A local environmental group is suing the County Board of Supervisors after it approved 510 new homes next to Towsley Canyon Park, saying the project will destroy protected trees and underground streams & increase fire risks. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents attended the Parenting for Prevention meeting at Hart High School in Newhall on Wednesday as city officials and Homeland Security representatives explained how rising online risks affect children after the COVID-19 pandemic. The event — featuring a resource fair and presentations on sextortion and internet predators — helped parents learn to protect their kids online.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • The California Partnership to End Domestic Violence honored Senator Eloise Gomez Reyes and Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo with the Movement Champion Award for their role in saving victim services and securing $100 million in state funds for hotlines, counseling, and housing until June 2026 — the award recognizes their leadership during tough budget years.  SCVNews.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • No. 10 College of the Canyons women's soccer snapped its two-game losing streak with a 2-1 home win over West. L.A. College on Halloween—ending the losing streak.  SCVNews.com
  • College of the Canyons football fell 58-14 to No. 1 Golden West on November 1 as the Cougars stayed close early before Golden West built a commanding lead with interceptions and touchdown passes—its quarterback threw three touchdowns to secure the win. The Cougars will close their season with a game against Bakersfield College on November 8 at 12 p.m.  SCVNews.com
  • The West Ranch girls’ volleyball team beat JSerra Catholic in straight sets+ winning 25-15, 25-14 and 25-19 to secure a spot in the Division 3 CIF Southern Section Championship; they will face Santa Margarita at Cerritos College on Saturday+.  Hometown Station
