- ➤ The SCV Food Pantry urged Santa Clarita residents today to support its services after officials warned that the federal government shutdown may soon disrupt CalFresh benefits many rely on. The pantry said donations, volunteer time and food drives are needed to help nearly 10,000 monthly clients—warning that local food banks could see a surge in need if the shutdown continues. - ➤ Last Wednesday, 2-month-old Jade Naylani died, possibly from carbon monoxide poisoning, and her mother Nicole launched a GoFundMe to pay for the funeral expenses—she said the family is still struggling with the loss of their long-awaited baby. Hometown Station
- ➤ On Oct. 29, the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at its Thomas E. - ➤ Santa Clarita is set to host a variety of events this week—haunted houses on select October nights, a job fair on October 17 at College of the Canyons’ West Gym, a wellness expo on October 18 at Plum Canyon Park, and more for local residents. - ➤ Santa Clarita will hold its largest Día de Muertos celebration on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Canyon Country Community Center—featuring a Mariachi performance, a Catrina Parade with traditional dances, and activities for children, while a bilingual Calavera Magnets Craft Workshop for adults and seniors is set for Thursday, Nov. 14, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Valencia Library Branch. - ➤ Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital celebrated the graduation of four interns from its Project SEARCH program in August. The interns helped in roles such as the cafeteria and materials management while earning certificates that add to 21 previous graduates since 2017 — marking an important step in job training. - ➤ The Santa Clarita Valley Mayor’s Committee for Employment of Individuals with Disabilities will host a breakfast to honor National Disability Employment Awareness Month at William S. Hart Hall in Hart Park on Oct. 23, 9-11 a.m. Up to 130 local business leaders will hear four speakers share stories and ideas about hiring people with disabilities (an event that marks the 80th anniversary of NDEAM) ($12 tickets available at the door). - ➤ Gary Horton — chairman of the College of the Canyons Foundation board — says Santa Clarita’s trails and sidewalks are becoming dangerous as e-bikes, scooters, and small motorcycles zip by without helmets. - ➤ American Cancer Society is hosting Bark for Life on Oct. 26 at Canyon Country Community Center, 18410 Sierra Highway, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Families may register one dog for $15 + $10 for each additional dog and can enjoy music, vendors, food trucks, contests and pet adoption to support cancer research and local services. - ➤ On Oct. 14, the Valencia girls’ volleyball team swept Golden Valley with scores of 25 to 11, 25 to 19 and 25 to 15, keeping them in third place and earning a playoff berth. They now wait for the playoff brackets to come out Saturday and will play their final game Wednesday at 5 p.m.—coach Kristin Dolan said the team’s goal is to make the playoffs.
