  • The American Cancer Society Santa Clarita Valley Unit will hold its Bark For Life Halloween Fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m.—2 p.m. to raise funds and awareness for cancer research in the community.  SCVNews.com
  • The Santa Clarita Valley chapter of Project Linus will host Make a Blanket Day on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at College of the Canyon’s East Gym — local families can drop off blankets between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., bring 1.5-2 yards of fleece, earn service hours and enjoy food from food trucks.  SCVNews.com

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two people were rescued from the Santa Clara River in Valencia Tuesday morning at about 9:15 a.m.—firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department saved them from a dangerous wash—and no injuries were reported.  Hometown Station
  • Jonathan Dicristofaro, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate who planned to study engineering at College of the Canyons, died on Oct. 3 in a fatal crash on Vanowen Street in North Hollywood when the car he was riding in left the road, hit a light pole, and caught fire, and 19-year-old Jason Ramirez also died as the LAPD investigated the incident.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

  • Metrolink won three Railway Technology Excellence Awards (for innovation, marketing, and safety) for its new wireless system that stops unnecessary gate activations, a Student Adventure Pass that offered 3.5 million free rides, and a ShakeAlert system that halted trains during a 5.2 quake on April 14.   • Santa Clarita residents can enjoy a special Halloween film event called Last Remains by the Los Angeles Conservancy at the historic Million Dollar Theater on October 25 with screenings at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and guided tours at noon and 6:00 p.m.—comedian Samantha Hale will host the show.  Hometown Station
  • Residents attended the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir workshop at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church on Oct. 11—where they learned two songs and opened for the ensemble’s concert on Saturday night.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The LA County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs delivered $31.78 million in relief to 3,425 wildfire-affected households through the Household Relief Grant—support that helped cover urgent costs for over 9,600 individuals. The program provided grants ranging from $6,000 to $18,000 and was funded by the Board, FireAid, and additional donations to aid families facing severe losses.  SCVNews.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • College of the Canyons won its sixth straight conference tournament last week at Encino Golf Course when four golfers finished in the top eight. Sophomore Sahya Kitabatake earned medalist honors with a score of 75 and the team (36-0) will next compete on October 20 at 11 a.m. at Rio Bravo Country Club.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • On October 14, 1980—Santa Clarita native Bob Walk, a Hart High graduate, started and won Game 1 of the World Series for the Philadelphia Phillies with a 7-6 victory over the Kansas City Royals at Veterans Stadium, marking him as the third rookie to open a World Series and setting the tone for the Phillies’ championship run.  Hometown Station
  • Stevenson Ranch tennis standout Ta’leighah Saulter earned bronze finalist honors at the USTA National Level 2 tournament in Sacramento—she competed against top junior players and added the achievement to her growing record.  Hometown Station
  • In the Foothill League girls flag football season, West Ranch and Hart are tied at 11–2; West Ranch will clinch the championship by beating Valencia at 6:30 p.m. today — Hart must beat Canyon and hope for a West Ranch loss to claim back-to-back titles. Vasquez and Castaic hold third and fourth with 8–5 and 7–6 records respectively while other teams trail behind.  Hometown Station
  • At the Manny Bautista College Open held on Oct 10 at Naval Training Center Park in San Diego, College of the Canyons’ women’s team finished fifth overall — with sophomore Victoria Jamison placing sixth — while the men’s team ended in ninth place.
