ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A child was airlifted from West Creek Park in Valencia at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday from 28310 Kelly Johnson Parkway after a medical emergency—first responders used both a helicopter and an ambulance and did not release the child’s age or condition.  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Clarita residents will be able to enjoy a festive Halloween season at the historic El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood this October—Hocus Pocus is scheduled for October 23 and The Nightmare Before Christmas for October 24 with ticket packages that offer reserved seating and themed snacks. Additional screenings with 3D and 4D effects will run through November for fans seeking a unique holiday outing.  Hometown Station
  • On October 7, 1954, the film 'Suddenly' starring Frank Sinatra and Sterling Hayden was released in New York after key scenes were shot on Newhall streets at the first Standard Oil gas station run by local figure Penny — the production also filmed a notable sequence at the historic Saugus Train Station, later moved to Heritage Junction Historic Park. This film remains a lasting legacy in Santa Clarita Valley's Hollywood history.  Hometown Station

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A group of Sierra Vista Junior High School students will be honored today by the Hart District for their quick response when teacher Kellie Kontis began choking on spicy edamame—three students helped save her life. The 7 p.m. meeting will also offer updates on safety and wellness and recognize award-winning teachers, including Golden Valley High School Teacher of the Year, Nicholas Patey.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • The Los Angeles County Library is holding its 46th Annual Bookmark Contest for students in kindergarten to high school until October 18—original designs inspired by reading and books may win local recognition and be featured in libraries countywide.   • Green Santa Clarita reported nearly 11K pounds of trash were collected at the 30th Annual River Rally and Environmental Expo—volunteers helped in the cleanup effort.  SCVNews.com
  • SCV Water officials held a virtual meeting on Oct 6 to update residents on plans to build a water treatment facility near Bridgeport Park to remove PFAS (cancer-causing chemicals) from drinking water, and they said the project costs $23.9 million (with about $22 million coming from state and federal grants). Construction will begin Monday with an 18- to 19-month timeline that will finish on April 15.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

  • The College of the Canyons governing board meets today to discuss the annual financial and budget report for the 2025-26 fiscal year—this report covers revenues, expenditures, and required adjustments to be certified by Oct. 10 as the board also reviews the acting superintendent's employment agreement following Jasmine Ruys’ appointment.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • Metro’s contractor is closing the westbound Lyons Avenue/Pico Canyon Road on-ramp to southbound I-5 for a 24-hour continuous closure now through Tuesday, Nov. 4 — part of the I-5 North County Enhancements Project. Drivers should plan to use alternate routes during the work.  SCVNews.com
  • The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion from Chair Kathryn Barger to investigate fraud in childhood sexual abuse claims filed under AB 218—this action will have County Counsel report back within 14 days. The motion also calls for stronger oversight of settlement agreements and a fraud hotline as the county faces budget cuts affecting vital services.  SCVNews.com

  • On October 7, the Santa Clarita Planning Commission approved two residential projects after hearing concerns about hillside stability, construction traffic, and neighborhood impacts. One project is a two-story residence with a pool and pool house on a 4.9-acre lot at Mikhail Street and the other legalizes a parcel map for a new home on Lost Canyon Road — both plans follow staff recommendations and local input.  Hometown Station

  • At midseason, Hart and Valencia remain unbeaten in the Foothill League & are in strong position for the title as Saugus, Canyon, and Castaic prepare for Friday games at College of the Canyons, Valencia High, and Canyon High.   • Former West Ranch quarterback Walker Eget led San Jose State to a 35–28 win over New Mexico on Friday night by throwing for 334 yards and three touchdowns — he completed 26 of 30 passes. The Spartans improved to a 2-3 record and 1-0 in conference play — they will face Wyoming next week as they try to turn their season around.  Hometown Station
