  • The SCV Boys and Girls Club held its eighth annual Great Futures Breakfast Oct 1 at the James T—Ventress Clubhouse in Newhall as nearly 200 community members supported programs serving about 900 local youth; club leaders shared personal stories on how the club guides young people to reach their potential.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • JCI Santa Clarita will host its first-ever Wellness Expo at Plum Canyon Park on Oct. 18—offering fitness classes, live demonstrations, raffles and vendor booths. The event will help residents learn about healthy living and connect with local wellness professionals.  Hometown Station

  • The Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce will host its Business After Hours Mixer at Valencia Acura on Wednesday, Oct. 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.—local business leaders are invited to attend.  SCVNews.com

  • William S. Hart Park in Newhall will host the 31st Hart of the West Pow Wow on Oct. 4-5 — a gathering of Indigenous peoples coming together to share their traditions.  SCVNews.com

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Burrtec Waste Industries will host a job fair in Santa Clarita on Oct. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon at SpringHill Suites Valencia — located at 27505 Wayne Mills Place — offering positions for drivers, dispatchers, recycling coordinators and mechanics with a sign-on bonus for qualified heavy-duty truck mechanics. Job seekers can also get full benefits including health, dental and vision insurance, a 401(k) match and paid time off.  Hometown Station

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The College of the Canyons Financial Aid Office will host its annual Cash for College workshop from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center to help students and their parents complete FAFSA and learn about various financial aid options—free and open to everyone with staff available to answer questions and free parking in all student lots.  Hometown Station

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On October 2, the federal government shut down after Congress failed to pass a funding bill, delaying pay for over 150,000 federal workers and nearly 1 million families' access to nutrition programs. Assemblywoman Pilar Schiavo said her office has already provided over $2 million in support—helping with unemployment claims, food services and access to essential benefits.  Hometown Station
  • Santa Clarita announced it will add a new Mobile Command Unit to boost emergency services and public events. The 45‑foot vehicle—bought for $1.5 million from state funds with support by Assemblywoman Pilar Schiavo—has seven work stations and advanced teleconferencing to improve coordination during disasters.  SCVNews.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Samuel Dixon Family Health Center, Inc. was named Organization of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers, California Chapter on Sept. 24 at a ceremony hosted by Stephanie Cotcher—Clinical Supervisor at William S. Hart Union High School District. The center—providing affordable medical, dental and behavioral care—has served thousands in the Santa Clarita Valley over more than four decades while forging strong community partnerships.  SCVNews.com
  • The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the Asthma Coalition released Breathless: Impact of Asthma on Children, a report that shows 7.3% of children ages 0—17 have asthma, with higher rates among Black/African American and Latino children. The report calls for stronger partnerships and better access to care—focusing on improved housing and air quality—to help manage asthma in young children.  SCVNews.com
  • On Sept. 27, over 300 residents attended Bras for a Cause at the Hyatt Regency in Valencia where host Steffanie Stelnick led a runway show with 12 models and handmade bras to raise funds for free mammograms and treatment for underserved patients—marking 22 years of local fight against breast cancer.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

  • Golden Valley won a Foothill League football game with a 35—7 score over Castaic on Thursday night as early interceptions and a pick-six built a strong lead. The Grizzlies now take a bye week before returning to play Valencia on October 16.  Hometown Station
  • West Ranch girls’ volleyball extended its undefeated streak with a win over Castaic on Sept. 30 by sweeping the match in straight sets — the Wildcats now prepare to host Golden Valley today at 5:30 p.m. to continue their strong Foothill League run.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
