COMMUNITY NEWS

  • JCI Santa Clarita will host its first Wellness Expo at Plum Canyon Park on Oct. 18, 2025 where residents can join fitness classes, demos, and vendor booths. The event will feature local wellness experts and sponsors to help families live healthier lives.  SCVNews.com
  • Santa Clarita has a busy week with many community, cultural and sports events planned. Highlights include a Beatles tribute at Golden Valley Theater on October 4 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.—a free document shredding and carpet recycling event at Via Princessa Metrolink Station, a 5K run at West Creek Park on October 5, and resume refresh labs at College of the Canyons on October 7.  Hometown Station
  • On October 1, 2025, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station deputies met community members at a Starbucks at the intersection of Newhall Ranch Road and Bouquet Canyon Road during National Coffee with a Cop Day, where they answered questions and listened to local concerns.   • Santa Clarita will host the 31st annual Hart of the West Pow Wow at William S. Hart Park this weekend, with events on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. — people can watch drum circles, dance shows, arts, crafts and food trucks and learn about Native heritage.  Hometown Station
  • City officials and local leaders gathered at Old Orchard Park in Newhall on October 1 to celebrate its reopening after a $7.8 million renovation that added a new futsal court, rock wall, multi-use court and adaptive swing. The park now has interactive playground elements and ADA-compliant restrooms—providing safe, fun access for everyone.  Hometown Station

  • Yes I Can Unity Through Music and Education has invited Santa Clarita and San Fernando businesses to offer inclusive internships during National Disability Employment Awareness Month—giving young adults with disabilities a chance to gain work experience at no cost. CRIME NEWS

  • On October 1, 2017, a shooter opened fire at a country music festival at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas—killing Santa Clarita resident John Phippen and injuring several others, including his son Travis who helped treat victims.  Hometown Station

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The College of the Canyons Financial Aid Office will host its annual 'Cash for College' workshop from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 7 at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center—an event offering free guidance on college financial aid.  SCVNews.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The LA County Regional Planning Commission approved staff recommendations to move forward with Entrada South and VCC, a project that will add more than 1,500 homes and 3 million square feet of commercial space in the Santa Clarita Valley. The plans will go to the Board of Supervisors for final approval on Nov. 18 and include changes to boost affordable housing and green building goals — though environmental groups raised concerns about protecting the wildlife corridor.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • The federal government shutdown, which began at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday due to unresolved funding disputes, led to reduced services that have affected Santa Clarita residents—National Weather Service public activities were canceled and many national park visitor centers closed. Local representatives, including Congressman Whitesides who kept his offices open and is donating his salary to Meals on Wheels, have stepped in to help affected constituents.  Hometown Station
  • Residents near the former Smiser Mule Ranch filed an appeal on the September 16 approval of the Wiley Canyon Mixed-Use Project, which sends the project to City Council review; the plan calls for 232 condos + 120 assisted living units on 31 acres and has raised concerns about fire safety, air quality and traffic as the site lies in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone with the closest fire station three miles away.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • October is National Pedestrian Safety Month and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is reminding drivers to slow down and yield at crosswalks to protect pedestrians. The department will conduct safety operations this month to check for speeding, illegal turns, failing to yield and distracted driving in an effort to lower pedestrian injuries and deaths.  SCVNews.com
