  • On Sept. 30, a crowd gathered in Valencia as the city reopened Old Orchard Park after a $7.8 million renovation that added a 14-foot, 5-inch slide and new play areas.   • KHTS Restaurant Row has launched new certificate deals for October that give Santa Clarita residents up to 50% off at local spots including Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt, Bélla Salon, La Michoacana Plus, Telly’s, SCV Cleaners and Guanatos Tacos. Certificates can be purchased online or at the KHTS station on Main Street — each limited to one per business per month and subject to restrictions.  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • In 1842, the New York Observer reported evidence of gold in Placerita Canyon—an event that marked an early chapter in Santa Clarita’s history.  SCVNews.com
  • The Santa Clarita Film Office announced that seven productions are filming in the valley from September 29 to October 4, including the action drama spinoff 'S.W.A.T. Exiles' with Shemar Moore, the docu-style series 'It's Florida Man,' the feature 'Blood Rush,' and the student film 'Hail, Mary' with support from Loyola Marymount University. Filming takes place at various local spots — boosting the busy local film scene this week.  Hometown Station
  • Circus Vargas will debut its new show 'Hollywood Dreams' at Valencia Town Center from October 11 to October 20. The event will charge $25 tickets and will feature stunts, aerial acts, and comedy—giving families a Hollywood tribute under the big top.  Hometown Station

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wendy Brill-Wynkoop, the head of the College of the Canyons photography department, was named a NEA Foundation Traveler’s Award winner for California after her 30 years of teaching were praised nationwide. She will be honored at the Salute to Excellence in Education Gala on February 13 when she joins a select group of 48 educators.  Hometown Station

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Santa Clarita Mayor Bill Miranda offered ideas to boost the city’s arts programs during a Sept. 24 meeting with the City Council, Arts Commission and city staff+ he urged more early input from arts leaders and highlighted Hart Park’s potential to become a regional cultural destination as consultants work on a new plan due in January or February.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion to implement recommendations from an independent After Action Report on the January 2025 Eaton and Palisades Fires—efforts aimed at strengthening emergency response by updating evacuation policies, enhancing training, restructuring staffing, modernizing communications and bolstering public education. The board also directed county agencies to report progress every 60 to 90 days and tasked the Chief Executive Office with a 60-day feasibility and fiscal impact report on restructuring the Office of Emergency Management.  SCVNews.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Amanda M. Woodworth, a breast surgical oncologist with Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital and Keck Medicine, was appointed to the American Cancer Society National Breast Cancer Roundtable Steering Committee. She will continue co-chairing its Risk Assessment, Screening, Risk Reduction and Early Diagnosis Priority Team to guide improved breast cancer care for patients in the valley and across the nation.  SCVNews.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Foothill League girls’ flag football season is set to end on October 15, with Hart Hawks, who led with a 10-1 record after beating Golden Valley 36-6 on Monday, keeping first place. West Ranch, Vasquez, and Castaic will battle for playoff spots as teams face key matchups in upcoming games, including Hart’s start in the Hueneme Tournament on Saturday morning — a game that could shape the final standings.  Hometown Station
  • College of the Canyons cross country ran its first out-of-state meet on Sept. 26, where the men's team won and the women's team finished second—freshman runners led several top individual placements. The team will return to action at the Bakersfield College Invitational on Oct. 3.  SCVNews.com
