COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Santa Clarita continues its Parenting for Prevention initiative—started in fall 2024—to help parents teach their children about healthy choices and substance abuse prevention. The program offers a bilingual podcast, in person parent meetings in English and Spanish and a monthly video series featuring local deputies and mental health experts.  SCVNews.com
  • Santa Clarita will host several haunted attractions this spooky season with events planned for October that offer both family-friendly and thrilling scares. A guide details options such as the free-admission Bar Harbor Scares, Pumpkin Hallow’s yard display, Beware the Dark Realm’s immersive maze, Pumpkin Jack’s Haunted House, and a sheriff’s station carnival—each with scheduled dates and times to help plan visits.  Hometown Station

CRIME NEWS

  • Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department are asking the public for help finding Teresa Williams, a 32-year-old woman with a cognitive impairment and mental health disorder who was last seen on Saturday on the 25000 block of Avenida Dorena wearing two fake diamond rings+ an apple watch+ a cross necklace.  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Oct. 12, the Santa Clarita Master Chorale will host an evening of Broadway tunes — A Grand Night for Singing — to raise funds for its operating budget.  SCVNews.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College of the Canyons got a $10,000 grant from the Golden Globe Foundation to help its Media Work Education Experience program where students make films and TV shows. Filming for the program’s first project, The Valley (a seven-part series about a homeless college student), began earlier this year and will show on SCVTV later.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • College of the Canyons’ Contracts, Procurement and Risk Management department won the 2025 Annual Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award for the fifth year in a row—one of only 15 colleges and 216 organizations nationwide to get the award—showing its strong service and careful handling of nearly $40 million in orders last fiscal year.  SCVNews.com
  • On September 29th, 1969, College of the Canyons began its first classes on the Hart High School campus in Newhall with about 800 students enrolling—far exceeding the expected count between 550 and 700; many early students were local residents eager to continue their education.  Hometown Station

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Santa Clarita has been named a Clean California Community by Caltrans’ Clean CA initiative—after meeting more than 10 criteria through environmental cleanups, hazardous waste collection and youth education programs, the city will receive special signage and automatic membership with Keep California Beautiful.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • The Santa Clarita City Council’s Public Safety Committee will meet to review crime and safety concerns with SCV Sheriff’s Station Capt. Brandon Barclay as Mayor Bill Miranda and Councilman Jason Gibbs examine new data that show property crimes fell nearly 15%—even though violent crimes and sexual assaults have risen. The station will hold a Coffee with a Cop event at Starbucks on Bouquet Canyon Road from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday so residents can meet local deputies.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • Santa Clarita planning officials said Eternal Valley Memorial Park plans to expand its cemetery area by about 20 acres and change part of the business park zoning to add community mausoleums and other features. Some residents remain upset over poor grounds conditions while cemetery officials said repair work and new irrigation will take 18 to 24 months to complete.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

SPORTS NEWS

  • No. 7 College of the Canyons posted a fourth shutout as they beat Santa Barbara City College 1-0 at La Playa Stadium last week—sophomore Bailey Williamson scored in the 67th minute to raise the team record to 6-0.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • Maddy Traylor scored three goals and Harmony Rohde scored twice as The Master’s University women’s soccer team beat the Hope International Royals 6-1 at Irvine Great Park on Sept. 27 — the win improved their record to 6-2 and put Traylor ahead with 11 conference goals.  SCVNews.com
  • Local high school teams in the Foothill League have had mixed success this season; on Sept 26, Valencia beat Saugus 55-14, Hart won 40-28 over Golden Valley, and Canyon earned its first win with a 42-0 victory over Castaic. Upcoming games on Oct 2 and Oct 3 will likely shift the league standings — fueling hopes for more victories next week.  SCVNews.com
  • The Master’s University women’s volleyball team defeated Embry-Riddle 3-0 in three close sets on Saturday, Sept. 27 at College of the Canyons, snapping a conference loss. The No. 11 Lady Mustangs improved to an 11-2 record and will face road games in Arizona—Friday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. and Saturday at noon.  SCVNews.com
