COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Santa Clarita community members are invited to National Coffee with a Cop on Wednesday, Oct. 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Starbucks (26480 Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus) where deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station will be available to discuss safety and neighborhood concerns.  Hometown Station
  • Zonta Club of Santa Clarita and Child and Family Center invite the community to join UNITE Against Domestic Violence, a free event to raise awareness and support survivors, to be held on October 3 at Child and Family Center. The event will feature a welcoming reception and remarks by local leaders — including Cherise, Nikki Buckstead, State Senator Suzette Valladares, Assembly Member Pilar Schiavo, and Sheriff’s Captain Brandon Barclay, and will run from 5:30 p.m.—7:30 p.m.  Hometown Station
  • The WiSH Wine Under the Roof fundraiser returns to the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center Bella Vida on Thursday, Nov. 6 — an event that will have a wine/appetizer hour, multi-course dinner, and live auctions to raise funds for education programs serving over 20,000 Hart Union School District students.  SCVNews.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • GraceFest, one of the largest Christian music festivals on the West Coast, will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, from 3—9:30 p.m. at Castaic Lake Recreation Area. The festival will feature performances by Taya, Tauren Wells, Danny Gokey and Miles Minnick, along with local church choirs, speakers, food vendors and art booths in its first year at the lake.  SCVNews.com
  • The Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce and Latino Business Alliance held their annual Hispanic Heritage celebration at The Centre on Wednesday evening, where guests ate tacos and drank agua frescas—Councilwoman Patsy Ayala and honorees including Christian Raigosa and Carlos and Megan Aguilar were recognized for their work in the local business community during Hispanic Heritage month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • On September 20, 1965, an earthen reservoir above Friendly Valley broke and unleashed a flash flood of 2 million gallons of brown water along Sierra Highway—damaging ten houses while no one was injured, a dramatic event among many that shape Santa Clarita’s history.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Golden Valley High teacher Nicholas Patey was named Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year on Sept. 19 and will advance to the California Teacher of the Year competition—his win marks the sixth straight time a Hart District educator has earned this honor.  SCVNews.com
  • The College of the Canyons Employee Training Institute has received $850,000 from the California Employment Training Panel to help Santa Clarita businesses train workers through customized programs over the next two years — this funding is the 18th contract in a series that has secured over $9 million for local employers.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Santa Clarita Transit is featured in the 'You’ve Got a Friend at City Hall' campaign to show its work in providing curb-to-curb rides for seniors and people with disabilities and in teaching riders about transit options. The unit works with regional partners and will add new hydrogen fuel cell buses this fall—efforts that aim to boost local mobility and lower emissions.  SCVNews.com
  • Gov. Gavin Newsom named Santa Clarita resident Jennifer Shepard to the Emergency Medical Services Commission on Sept. 11, and she has joined a 17-member board—responsible for coordinating EMS across California—after her work as a deputy paramedic with the L.A.   • On Oct. 23, the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce will hold its sixth annual Health & Wellness Forum from 7:45-10 a.m. at the Henry Mayo Center in Valencia — keynote Dr. Regina Ragasa and an expert panel including Dr. James S. LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Pistachio—an 8-year-old desert tortoise—is available for adoption at the Castaic Animal Care Center where he enjoys leafy greens, digging and sunbathing. Adopters must obtain special permits and prepare a secure space because desert tortoises are protected by law.  Hometown Station

SPORTS NEWS

  • In today's Foothill League opener, Hart's quarterback Jacob Paisano rushed for four touchdowns and threw for two — helping Hart to a 46 to 35 win over Saugus. Hart will host Golden Valley next Friday while Saugus prepares to face Valencia in their upcoming matchup.  Hometown Station
  • At Canyon High on Friday night, Golden Valley rallied as junior running back Dereck Guevara ran for more than 100 yards and scored a 7-yard game-winning touchdown—giving the Grizzlies a 14—10 win over the Cowboys in their Foothill League opener.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • Saugus girls’ volleyball swept Castaic with scores of 25-15, 25-12, and 25-18 on September 18 during a Foothill League game, earning their 21st win and keeping them in second place.
