- ➤ The City of Santa Clarita will reopen Old Orchard Park on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 9 a.m. at 25023 Avenida Rotella—families and sports fans will enjoy upgraded playground equipment, a new multisport court with a futsal demonstration by Insainz Training Academy, and a colorful art piece honoring local oak trees. - ➤ The Zonta Club of Santa Clarita and Child and Family Center will host UNITE Against Domestic Violence on Friday, Oct. 3 at the Child and Family Center; the event will run from 5:30 p.m.—7:30 p.m.—with local leaders discussing ways to support survivors. SCVNews.com
- ➤ Finally Family Homes hosts its 3rd Annual Poker Tournament to support young adults in Santa Clarita on October 18th at 5:30 p.m. at the Oasis Resource Center in Newhall — last year’s champion Samuel Birdsong will defend his title as players enjoy poker, dinner, drinks, and a silent auction that raises funds for housing and life-skills programs. - ➤ More than 1,000 people gathered at Marketplace Park in Valencia on Sept. 17 to hold a candlelight vigil in memory of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed on Sept. 10 while starting his American Comeback Tour; local students, community leaders, and officials led prayers calling for unity and honest dialogue. - ➤ Santa Clarita’s new art exhibition Celebrating Life by Bob Hernandez opens today at The MAIN—residents can attend a free art reception from 7 to 10 p.m. to meet the artist, and the exhibit will run until Nov. 19. SCVNews.com
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ College of the Canyons received a $10,000 grant from the Golden Globe Foundation—making it the only community college chosen nationwide for the 2025-26 awards—to support its media program where students produce a seven-episode series called 'The Valley.' Filming wrapped in May and the series will premiere on SCVTV later this year. SCVNews.com
- ➤ On September 17th in 1879, the first official schoolhouse in Newhall was built near the northeast corner of Walnut and Ninth Streets and served grades one through eight with very few students attending each day; John Ellsworth Wright later taught there until 1899. Hometown Station

- ➤ The Santa Clarita Planning Commission approved major upgrades for Hasa’s pool-chemical facility in the Saugus industrial center by a 3-1 vote, moving its retail bottling to two one-story metal buildings on Springbrook Avenue. - ➤ The California Department of Public Health issued new guidance for immunization against COVID-19, influenza, and RSV in coordination with West Coast Health Alliance partners.
