CRIME NEWS

  • Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials confirmed on Wednesday that 38-year-old Douglas James Miller was arrested on suspicion of elder abuse after officers responded around 8:00 p.m. Tuesday to a call on the 17300 block of Humphreys Parkway—where a verbal dispute with his 70-year-old father turned physical.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • A mother was arrested after deputies rescued a young child—found wandering in only a shirt and diaper with her dog and iPad on Magic Mountain Parkway near McBean Parkway in Valencia—who was safely returned home after late Wednesday night calls.  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Old Town Newhall Library is hosting an adults Potions Class: Magic Mocktails on Sept. 11 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at 24500 Main St.—this event lets participants explore creative mixology in a hands-on setting.  SCVNews.com
  • The city announced that artist Tim Forcum’s exhibition 'A Conversation Under the Sun' is on view at the Old Town Newhall Library through Nov. 12—inviting residents to enjoy local art.  SCVNews.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • iLEAD Agua Dulce is launching an expanded arts education program this school year with its theme 'Create Your Masterpiece' that starts on September 2 and offers dance, theatre, music, and visual arts for students from transitional kindergarten through 12. The program is funded by Proposition 28 and a partnership with The Music Center—providing hands-on learning opportunities for every learner.  Hometown Station
  • The College of the Canyons Foundation will host the Swing for Student Success Golf Tournament on Monday, Oct. 20 at Valencia Country Club to fund scholarships, emergency aid and essential student services — the event will feature activities such as an air cannon shot with the Mulligan Package, a helicopter ball drop sponsored by BMO Bank, and caddies from the championship-winning COC men’s golf team will also assist during the tournament.  Hometown Station

SPORTS NEWS

  • College of the Canyons women’s golf won the annual Chuck Melendez Invitational at Olivas Links Golf Course with a team score of 363—defeating Santa Barbara City College and giving defending medalist Sahya Kitabatake a round of 77. They will return to conference play Monday, Sept. 8 at Santa Barbara Golf Club after an off week.  SCVNews.com
  • College of the Canyons opened its soccer season by defeating Moorpark College 1-0 on Tuesday night, Aug. 26, with freshman Andrew Sorto scoring his first collegiate goal after a turnover set up by teammate Carlos Mendez; the win was the first season opener since 2018 and the team will play San Diego Miramar College today at 4 p.m.—local club teams are invited and $1 hotdogs will be on sale.  SCVNews.com
  • College of the Canyons women’s volleyball won 3-2 over Cypress College on Aug. 22 at the Pasadena City College Tri-Tourney and then lost 3-1 to Pasadena City for a season-opening 1-1 split—Savannah Anaya led with 11 kills.  SCVNews.com
