COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Wednesday evening, residents gathered at Central Park for Santa Clarita’s annual Evening of Remembrance to honor local youth lost in traffic accidents. The event began at 7:15 p.m.—led by Sheriff’s Station Captain Brandon Barclay—and featured 123 concrete pillars at the Youth Grove with names read aloud and remarks urging safer driving.  Hometown Station

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, Circle K is offering a fuel discount with up to 40 cents off per gallon at over 700 stations in 11 states, including California, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.—customers in line before 7 p.m. get the savings while supplies last. Inner Circle rewards members in Oregon and select Washington stores can access the discount early from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.  SCVNews.com

CRIME NEWS

  • A neighbor called 911 after seeing two individuals steal a catalytic converter from an SUV at around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 28500 block of Redwood Canyon Place, and police tracked the suspects—Robert Acuna and Kenneth Lopez—who were arrested and booked on felony grand theft and tool possession charges.  Hometown Station
  • A Canyon Country man was arrested after he allegedly broke into a 54-year-old woman's home early Sunday at around 3:10 a.m. on the 19700 block of Merryhill Street—deputies located and detained 30-year-old Chaz Karratti after the suspect fled before their arrival.  Hometown Station
  • Ashley Friel, 37, was arrested on felony charges—petty theft with priors, conspiracy and organized retail theft—for allegedly stealing $300 in golf balls from Dick’s Sporting Goods on the 26500 block of Carl Boyer Drive in Canyon Country on August 27th.  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • In 1962, a valleywide brush fire burned through Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch movie town in Placerita Canyon—destroying much of the set and leaving a lasting mark on local history.  SCVNews.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • SCV Water is accepting applications for the 2025 SCV Water Academy — a free in-person program that will give residents a behind-the-scenes look at water supply management through interactive sessions in October. Applicants must be 18 or older and live or work in the service area, and registration closes on September 17.  Hometown Station

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Laurene Weste appointed Daniel Faina as the new planning commissioner after a 3-2 vote on July 8 removed former commissioner Denise Lite—Faina is a long-time resident with nearly 20 years of experience in building and community work who led the Rebuild Ventura effort after the 2017 Thomas Fire and will help guide future projects.  Hometown Station

SPORTS NEWS

  • Girls’ flag football returned for its second season in Santa Clarita as local teams vie for playoff spots. Defending champion Hart is unbeaten with five straight wins and will face Golden Valley on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.—other teams like Castaic and Canyon also have key games this week.  Hometown Station
