ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A big rig caught fire on the right shoulder of southbound Interstate 5 north of Interstate 405 Monday morning, and officers from the California Highway Patrol and Los Angeles County Fire Department responded at 4:59 a.m.—Caltrans closed several lanes by 6:48 a.m. as the driver separated the tractor from the trailer.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

CRIME NEWS

  • A former local college baseball player from Newhall is facing three felony charges for the alleged assault of an elderly Doc’s Inn patron on Feb. 28—he is set to return to court on Sept. 8.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • An alleged drunk driver—Oscar Fidel Andrade Martinez—caused a three-vehicle crash on Highway 126 near Valencia Friday around 5 p.m. that blocked eastbound lanes, sent several people to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, and led to his arrest for felony DUI causing injury.  Hometown Station
  • Deputies at the Newhall Metrolink Station located meth and drug paraphernalia in a car last Thursday around 8:30 p.m. near Railroad Avenue and Market Street in Newhall—arresting Hector Gayton from Castaic on a felony charge for controlled substance possession with prior convictions and a misdemeanor for drug paraphernalia.  Hometown Station
  • Authorities pursued a suspect wanted for assault on a peace officer after the individual exited the 14 Freeway at Escondido Canyon Road and reentered it, and he was taken into custody near Soledad Canyon Road and Shadow Pines Boulevard using a spike strip—drivers are advised to avoid the area.  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • Concerts in the Park will close the 35-summer tradition with a final event on Saturday, Aug. 30, at Central Park where family-friendly activities begin at 3 p.m. — Dark Desert Highway will start the music at 4 p.m., followed by Dustland Fairytale at 5:30 p.m. and The PettyBreakers at 7 p.m.  SCVNews.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Santa Clarita City Council is set to review TMU’s request for $65 million in tax-exempt revenue bonds today to fund a campus expansion that will include building a cathedral-scale chapel— the first of its kind since the Great Depression— and new student housing. City officials stressed that the bonds place no financial responsibility on the city, and a revised master plan is required before construction begins.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital earned Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with PCI in July after a rigorous on-site review by the American College of Cardiology—making it the first hospital in Los Angeles County to receive this honor.
