- ➤ On August 11th, 4-year-old Eloise Burbach set up a lemonade stand and sold painted rocks to raise money for Child & Family Center after learning to save, spend, and share from her parents. Eloise split her earnings—saving some, buying an Anna Dress, and donating $43—and the center has launched the Eloise Challenge to match her gift. Hometown Station
- ➤ Blue Star Ranch—a nonprofit that helps veterans through equine therapy—is asking the community for urgent support after its executive director Nancy Zhe was injured in an accident, with a GoFundMe campaign launched to cover essential costs and a Poker Run event scheduled for September 13th to raise additional funds. - ➤ Child & Family Center held its board installation ceremony Aug.7—starting the 2025–26 fiscal year and honoring retiring board member Dr. Marc Winger for over 20 years of service. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Officials reported the Canyon Fire was 91% contained at 11:45 a.m. on Monday with remote pockets of heat in hard-to-reach areas while 960 firefighters secured fire lines in Hasley Canyon, Val Verde and near Castaic High School. - ➤ A Newhall man pleaded no contest to charges from the April 2024 shooting of an LAPD officer at his Valencia home after an alcohol-fueled prom party — his plea deal includes three years in state prison with concurrent sentences for vehicle theft and receiving stolen goods, and he will be sentenced on August 18th. - ➤ Over the weekend, 34 individuals were arrested in Santa Clarita Valley for crimes such as domestic violence, DUI, assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury, theft, vandalism, and drug offenses — nine faced felony charges and 24 misdemeanors — and 16 of those arrested were local residents. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Nearly 14 months after Santa Clarita Elementary closed in June 2024 due to declining enrollment, seismic concerns, and high upgrade costs, local residents have voiced frustration over a lack of transparency and the loss of a community school as well as an important architectural landmark. A local advocacy group has formed and the school district board will meet on August 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the district office in Valencia to consider plans to repurpose the property — including preserving its unique circular design — for community use. - ➤ City Manager Ken Striplin reminded Santa Clarita residents that August is Traffic Safety Month as more students walk, bike and drive to school. He said drivers must slow down near crosswalks and school buses while local law enforcement will issue citations on high-powered e-bikes that are ridden unsafely. SCVNews.com
