  • Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy Library will open its Summer Sensory room for adults with disabilities and caregivers in the Community Room at 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12—this setting is designed to offer accessible sensory opportunities.  SCVNews.com

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A brush fire called the Canyon Fire was reported near the 6700 block of Holser Canyon Road in Piru Thursday at 1:30 p.m.—it covered about 30 acres—and prompted evacuation warnings for neighborhoods in Castaic and Vale Verde.  Hometown Station

CRIME NEWS

  • Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Detective Joshua Kelley-Eklund was honored with a funeral service yesterday at Grace Baptist Church in Santa Clarita as law enforcement and fire department representatives gathered to pay their respects after he was killed in an explosion in East L.A. on July 18.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • Earlier this week, thieves stole a Santa Clarita soccer coach's truck loaded with equipment (Coach Kevin Morales of Legends Club Soccer and the Youth Soccer League) and supporters set up a GoFundMe (goal: $8,000) to replace the gear.  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Clarita will honor legendary cowgirl Sammy Thurman-Brackenbury with a star on its Walk of Western Stars on November 24th. The champion barrel racer—who passed away last December—was celebrated for her achievements in rodeo and film stunts.  Hometown Station

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Santa Clarita Elementary School closed because a steady drop in enrollment and seismic safety issues made the repair costs ($9 million to $24 million) too high, so students were moved to other schools. The district will offer plans for the school's future at a board meeting (August 19).  Hometown Station

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • With school starting, Mayor Bill Miranda told Santa Clarita parents to check that their child’s e-bike has pedals and the proper label so it is legal to ride on streets and trails — some bikes sold as teen-friendly are actually powerful e-motorcycles that break the law. Local law enforcement is increasing safety checks and may fine violators over $500 or delay their driver’s licenses.  SCVNews.com
