On August 2, 1956, the Newhall Signal and the Saugus Enterprise reported plans for the largest housing development in the Santa Clarita Valley— a 213-home Happy Valley project led by native Ted Lamkin that stretched across the former Miller Ranch with an equestrian trail and nearly 13 acres reserved for Peachland Elementary School. Initial sales began in early 1957 with 50 large lots, and the development was expected to be completed within five years.
The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control is taking part in the annual Clear The Shelters event throughout August — waiving adoption, spay/neuter, and microchip fees at all seven animal care centers to help more pets find homes.
Marcia Mayeda said the event builds on last year's record, with over 168,000 pet adoptions—encouraging families to visit centers and meet adoptable pets.
