COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Last week, the City of Santa Clarita held a Pet Adoption Day at Bridgeport Park in partnership with the Castaic Animal Care Center, where five dogs found new homes and families enjoyed hands-on activities (with waived fees) from community partners. The Center hosted another weekend event that led to 21 more pet adoptions, and fees will be waived for all pets in August (as part of the Clear the Shelter campaign).  Hometown Station

  • At 9:32 a.m. Thursday, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake hit Fontana and residents in Santa Clarita felt the shaking though no damage was reported.  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • The city of Santa Clarita announced that the art exhibit 'To Teeter on a Three Faced Ledge' by artist Demi Sedrakyan will be on view at the Valencia Library through October 28—its paintings use layers of color and texture to show care and migration.  SCVNews.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Serenity Grace Russell, a 10-year-old student at Castaic Elementary, was crowned International United Miss Junior Preteen on July 19—earning praise for her strong stage presence and over 300 volunteer hours as she founded her Service Squad to help kids give back to the community.  SCVNews.com
  • College of the Canyons will host Welcome Day on Friday Aug. 15 to introduce incoming freshmen and prospective and continuing students to campus. Attendees will join workshops from 9:30 a.m. to noon, meet faculty & staff, tour the campus at the Student Center and Canyons Hall, and enjoy free parking during the event.  Hometown Station
  • The William S. Hart Union High School District announced new leadership appointments as Jennifer Ambrose became principal at Golden Valley High School, Anna Konopliv joined Canyon High School and Marisa Lucero took the role at Saugus High School, and Debbie Dunn was named director of communications and community engagement, all effective July 24.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

HEALTH NEWS

  • On July 31, U.S. News & World Report honored three Providence hospitals in the San Fernando Valley—Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, and Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center—with 36 awards recognizing excellence in patient care across many specialties. The rankings evaluated hospital performance using key patient outcomes to help guide care decisions.  Hometown Station
