- ➤ Millicent 'Millie' Jones, an 11-year-old Santa Clarita girl who fought a rare brain cancer with courage, passed away on July 12 while surrounded by her family. A public memorial service is planned for July 31 at Higher Vision Church in Valencia & a GoFundMe campaign is underway to support her family. Hometown Station
- ➤ On July 21, 1952, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Kern County shook the Santa Clarita Valley early in the morning (it was the strongest quake since the Fort Tejon earthquake of 1857) and left lasting memories among residents. Hometown Station
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Law enforcement in Santa Clarita reported over 40 arrests over the fourth consecutive weekend—15 facing felony charges and multiple cases of domestic violence and DUI—and 14 of those arrested were non-residents. Hometown Station

- ➤ The Santa Clarita Artists Association is calling for artist submissions for its Art Classic and Gala on Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Centre at 20880 Centre Point Parkway with artwork viewing on Sunday, Sept. 28 and is asking for donations for the silent auction; the event supports its scholarship program (artwork must be original and not previously displayed) (attendance is limited to 250 people). - ➤ The Santa Clarita Artists Association will host its Pop Up Anything Goes Art Show on two weekends in August — Aug. 1-3 and Aug. 8-10 — at the SCAA Gallery in Old Town Newhall and is looking for four artists per weekend to exhibit original, family friendly work under an open theme. - ➤ The Santa Clarita Community College District approved early plans on July 16 for a new 75,000-square-foot Advanced Technology Center at College of the Canyons’ Valencia campus and hired KBZ to design it. KBZ will create working drawings for state review in November and Ledesma & Meyer Construction Co. will move a waterline—work required before construction begins. Hometown Station

- ➤ Rep. George Whitesides introduced the Improving Atmospheric River Forecasts Act with fellow CA representatives to help NOAA improve storm tracking for atmospheric rivers. The bipartisan bill has support from the Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency and will expand research and deploy new monitoring technology—aimed at better forecasting heavy rains and flooding—so communities can prepare. - ➤ Rep. George Whitesides secured federal funding through the NDAA to create jobs and boost fire detection in our district, including billions for new aircraft + improved fire tracking systems.
