  • Valencia Town Center will host its Back to School Bash from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9—held at the lower level of the mall near H&M.  SCVNews.com
  • The Friends of Castaic Animal Shelter will host an Ice Cream Social and pet adoption event from 1—3 p.m. Sunday, July 20 at Pet Supplies Plus where Santa Clarita residents can meet adoptable pets and enjoy ice cream.  SCVNews.com
  • On July 17, 2025, local faith leaders and members of Indivisible CA27 held an interfaith vigil honoring Congressman John Lewis. The group began a peaceful procession at 7:00 p.m. from the Good Trouble corner at McBean and Valencia Blvd and moved to Valencia United Methodist Church at 7:30 p.m.—before marching back until 9:30 p.m.  Hometown Station

CRIME NEWS

  • On Thursday afternoon, a high-speed chase that began in Palmdale ended in Santa Clarita when CHP officers detained two individuals after a black Toyota Prius—registered in Palmdale and speeding over 110 mph—was stopped near Sand Canyon Road with no injuries or collisions reported.  Hometown Station
  • A traffic stop on The Old Road in Stevenson Ranch on June 27 led deputies to arrest parolee Joseph Clifford Bavle—45, a glass worker from Castaic—on felony gun charges after they found a short-barreled shotgun, firearm and live ammunition in his vehicle; officers later arrested three others on drug-related charges, and Bavle pleaded not guilty Monday while he remains held without bail pending a hearing set for July 29.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Grocery workers from six UFCW locals voted to ratify a new three-year contract with Ralphs and Albertsons—bringing wage increases, faster health care eligibility and a role in staffing reviews. The contract reached after months of talks now affects over 45,000 workers and takes effect immediately.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

  • The Santa Clarita Public Library will hold its Summer Reading Finale on Friday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Old Town Newhall Branch—featuring live performers, music, crafts and story time to celebrate a summer of reading and adventure.  SCVNews.com
  • Golden Oak Adult School announced that online registration is now open for the fall courses—classes will start on Monday, Aug. 18.   • Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong indicated she was leaning toward the county’s side in its lawsuit against Chiquita Canyon Landfill—she did not issue a ruling at Thursday’s hearing. L.A. HEALTH NEWS

  • A newly released CASPER survey of households within four miles of Chiquita Canyon Landfill in Santa Clarita, Castaic and Val Verde revealed alarmingly high rates of illness including high blood pressure, heart disease, miscarriage and cancer. Assemblywoman Pilar Schiavo has called for swift state and local aid, including a request for $50 million in relocation help — a measure she says is needed to stop the crisis.  Hometown Station
