- ➤ On July 13, 1884, oilmen Wallace Hardison and Lyman Stewart began drilling the Star No. 1 oil well in Pico Canyon just west of modern Santa Clarita — an effort that boosted the local oil industry — and they later built a warehouse in downtown Newhall to store supplies. Hometown Station
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ L.A. County Parks ended its management of Hart Park yesterday as the City of Santa Clarita finalized the handover, and today the city takes exclusive control of the park. Local officials expressed confidence that the city will continue the park’s legacy—marking a new chapter in its care—while ensuring it remains well maintained. Hometown Station
- ➤ On July 13, the CHP announced it had given more than $35 million in grants from cannabis sales tax to 148 groups to fight impaired driving. The funds went to law enforcement, labs, and local agencies for training and outreach—applications for more grants will open again in early 2026. Hometown Station
