Nominations for the SCV 40 Under Forty Awards are open, honoring local rising leaders ages 18 to 40.
The gala takes place at Bella Vida (Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center) on Nov. 14 with a VIP hour at 5 p.m. and the ceremony at 6 p.m.
Eve Jones expressed concern that the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center lacks diversity in its programming (classes, entertainment, and cultural celebrations) while mostly featuring Caucasian-led events; she argued that the multi-cultural center in Canyon Country needs more inclusive offerings.
On July 6, 1850, Henry Mayo Newhall arrived in San Francisco to join the Gold Rush but his mining claims were taken; he turned to auctioneering and built a business empire that helped shape the area now known as Newhall.
🚧 Accidents
On Monday, July 6, a vehicle fire on northbound I-5 near Templin Highway sparked a brush fire that grew to 15 acres in Castaic, prompting lane closures and an evacuation warning for Paradise Ranch Estates using a precautionary response.

The Santa Clarita Film Office has listed five productions filming locally from Monday, July 9 to Sunday, July 12 (including film, TV, commercial, and web projects) that are expected to boost local spending and showcase community talent.
🎓 Education
College of the Canyons received a $1.1 million donation from The Broad Foundation to support its Advanced Technology Center for high-demand tech fields.
The two-year grant will fund program development and outreach at the interim facility on 26306 Diamond Place.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Missing Persons Unit is seeking help to locate Richard Alan Garrett, 80, last seen at 12 p.m. on July 5 near Castaic Road and Ridge Route Road in Castaic as he is at risk due to memory loss.
LASD announced today its partnership with 7-Eleven to launch Operation Chill, a program offering free Slurpee coupons to youth for positive behavior this summer.
Deputies will distribute about 5,000 coupons across the county + aim to build stronger community trust.
🏈 Sports
24-year-old Miguel Mayorga became the youngest head coach in the Foothill League when he took over Golden Valley's boys’ basketball team after leading the junior varsity to a 23-2 record and a league title last season.
He will try to win back-to-back league titles this season.
