  • Wrinkles, a 4-year-old Chinese Sharpei weighing 46 pounds with a light tan coat, was surrendered earlier this month to the Castaic Animal Care Center because his previous owners could not care for him and he became depressed after his buddy Lucas was adopted. The shelter is open (11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday) at 31044 Charlie Canyon Road in Castaic where local visitors can meet him and help find him a loving home.  Hometown Station
  • Main Street in Old Town Newhall hosted the Senses Block Party themed Date Night on June 20 — the event featured live music by Anthem Road and fun activities that brought neighbors together.   • At Wednesday's board meeting at the William S. Hart Union High School District headquarters in Canyon Country, former councilman Bob Kellar received the One Hart Award from board member Aakash Ahuja for his long service in Santa Clarita. CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday afternoon, two Hispanic men aged 25 to 30 allegedly stole two packages from a UPS truck in the 27000 block of McBean Parkway in Valencia—authorities said the suspects were seen fleeing west on Magic Mountain Parkway in a Chevy Cruze and remained on the run as of 1:25 p.m.  Hometown Station
  • A Lancaster man named Christopher James Williamson, 37, was arrested on fraud charges for ordering an Apple Watch and iPhone using a cancer patient’s information in Valencia — he faces three felonies and one misdemeanor and will have his next hearing on July 18.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • Deputies responded at 10:10 p.m. on Thursday to a call from a Santa Clarita resident reporting a break-in on the 28000 block of Iron Village Drive and found evidence that a rear sliding-glass door was used for entry—stolen items were enough to support a grand-theft charge, though the suspect had already left.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

  • College of the Canyons students Daniel Begel and Amir Erfan Shahla were among 90 community college students nationwide awarded the Jack Kent Cooke undergraduate transfer scholarship (offering up to $55,000 per year for up to three years). Begel will study electrical engineering and computer science at UC Berkeley, and Shahla was admitted to Stanford to study engineering for medical device design.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

  • Santa Clarita officials held a wildfire safety conference Friday, June 20 at Towsley Canyon Park where Mayor Bill Miranda and first responders warned that dry conditions and high winds can turn one spark into a dangerous wildfire. Officials advised residents to clear brush, plan evacuation routes, and avoid illegal fireworks ahead of July 4 — penalties may be steep for violations — to protect lives and property.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

HEALTH NEWS

  • As summer heat approaches, Santa Clarita pet owners are advised to watch for signs of heat stress such as panting and drooling and to keep pets cool with clean water and shade.
