  • The Santa Clarita Public Library offers free summer events for children, teens and adults with Check It OUT-Side park visits every Tuesday through July 22. The programs include teen game sessions, adult craft workshops and Library Express park visits every second and fourth Friday—details vary by branch—and require a library card.  SCVNews.com
  • Santa Clarita will celebrate the Fourth of July Parade on July 4 as families, veterans, and community leaders come together to honor independence with a theme (Home is Where the Hart is…Welcome Hart Park). The parade will start at 9 a.m. at the Newhall Roundabout and follow Main Street, Lyons Avenue, and Orchard Village Road, ending near Newhall Park (Hart Park ownership was approved last month by the Superior Court).  SCVNews.com
  • Pre-registration for the Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children's Cancer Cheers for Charity fundraiser ends Monday, June 30 with tickets at $60 for adults and $10 for kids while regular registration starts Tuesday, July 1 at $75 for adults and $20 for kids—on Saturday, Sept. 13 the event will feature a live concert, food truck dinner, and a Kid's Fun Zone at Canyon Country Community Center to benefit the foundation.  SCVNews.com

  • On Wednesday, June 19 at 11:26 a.m., first responders and the Santa Clarita Valley Search and Rescue rescued a man in his 40s from distress on the Whitney Trail in Newhall when temperatures reached 104°—officials advised hikers to avoid midday heat.  Hometown Station

CRIME NEWS

  • At 2:25 a.m. Thursday, a high-speed pursuit near the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station ended in a rollover crash when a vehicle ran a red light, reached 90 mph, and swerved onto multiple roads—authorities pulled the suspect from the car and called an ambulance as a precaution.  Hometown Station

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Hart Union High School District board reviewed two presentations on the next school year’s LCAP plan and budget and held public hearings for community input on Wednesday + the board will present the LCAP, budget, and local indicators for approval next Wednesday at 8 a.m. at the administrative office.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials said that a June quarterly monitoring report for the Saugus Industrial Center found groundwater with VOC levels—including 1,2-DCA, trichloroethylene and vinyl chloride—that far exceed state limits from past industrial operations. Cleanup continues with bioremediation efforts while SCV Water warns that off-site contamination may affect local drinking water and delay future development plans.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

  • SCV Water offers up to a $200 rebate for new pool covers that cover at least 85% of a pool’s surface to cut heating costs, water loss and chemical use. Applicants must use SCV Water service and provide a water bill, pool cover receipt and photo of the cover in use—applications must be submitted within six months of purchase.  SCVNews.com
