COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Santa Clarita is set for a busy week—on Tuesday, June 10 the City Council will meet at City Hall for a public hearing on stormwater fee rates, and on June 30 the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Golf Tournament will be held at Valencia Country Club. Other community events include a SENSES block party on June 19, a ballet performance of 'The Sleeping Beauty' on Saturday, June 14, and various local initiatives to support culture and safety.  SCVNews.com
  • Walmart held a ribbon cutting Friday at its Canyon Country store to show off the remodeled space with better layouts and a new community mural (local vendors offered free samples and community groups received grants). The store now uses energy-saving tools and will add EV chargers soon (Walmart also supports Santa Clarita Grocery by repurposing 177 tons of food).  Hometown Station

CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies arrested a man after he allegedly sexually assaulted an intoxicated woman at Plum Canyon Park on the 18800 block of Skyline Ranch Road in Saugus around 11 p.m. Thursday—detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Bureau are investigating the incident.  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • On June 6th, 1824, Mexican troops marched through Santa Clarita (a key crossroad in the conflict) as part of operations that ended the Chumash Revolt, resulting in the deaths of 43 natives and 8 soldiers. Many native survivors fled to missions (including San Ynez) while later negotiations led to a general pardon for the rebels.  Hometown Station

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College of the Canyons students Daniel Begel and Amir Erfan Shahla were awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, which offers up to $55,000 per year for three years + recognizes academic achievement, financial need, and leadership. Begel will transfer to UC Berkeley to study Electrical Engineering and Computer Science while Shahla, who was also admitted to Stanford, will study engineering.  Hometown Station
  • College of the Canyons held its 2025 commencement ceremony where 827 students earned degrees—two earned six degrees and one earned seven. International student Do Lee, who began college alone amid language challenges, spoke about her perseverance—she will transfer to UC Berkeley for data science studies.  Hometown Station

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed it is investigating one measles case in a Santa Clarita resident who traveled internationally and exposed people at local public sites on May 28. Health officials advise anyone not immunized to monitor for symptoms through June 18 and to speak with a healthcare provider about getting the MMR vaccine.  SCVNews.com

  • West Ranch High School named former MLB catcher Trevor Brown as its new head baseball coach after winning the CIF-SS Division 2 championship, and he will be introduced to parents at a meeting on Monday, June 9, at 7 p.m.—Brown brings valuable playing and coaching experience that will help the team grow both on and off the field.  Hometown Station
