CRIME NEWS

  • On June 2, 2025, CHP officers stopped a wrong-way driver on the 14 Freeway near Escondido Canyon Road after she evaded a traffic stop, and today they detained a second suspect sleeping near the Agua Dulce Canyon Road exit who had an outstanding warrant and was taken to the hospital for heat injury—officials say he is now receiving treatment.  Hometown Station
  • Deputy Trevor Kirk, a man from Valencia, received a four-month prison sentence and one year of probation on Monday after a federal conviction for using excessive force during a theft at a Lancaster grocery store—his lawyer said he will file an appeal once the court proceedings conclude later this week.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

  • The city of Santa Clarita announced an exhibition—Walk with Me by photographer Nima Kharrazi—that will be on view at the Valencia Library through July 30.  SCVNews.com
  • Today, the city of Santa Clarita Film Office announced that three productions are filming in the valley from June 2 to 7, including TV shows "Aces" and "The Family Business" and a commercial for Kohl's. The filming continues a trend that saw 400 film permits and an estimated $19 million in local economic impact last year.  SCVNews.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The College of the Canyons physical therapist assistant program earned Candidate for Accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education — it will enroll 28 students in a five-semester course launching in fall that uses three labs to simulate hospital, home, and clinic care settings. HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents near Chiquita Canyon Landfill reported severe health issues including asthma, nosebleeds, and cancer linked to toxic fumes from an underground chemical fire that has burned since early 2023. State representatives visited Val Verde last Friday (May 30) to listen to residents and announced bills for improved safety while the AQMD issued notices of violation on April 1 and May 28 (for permit and operational failures).  Hometown Station

  • Samantha Rodriguez, a two-sport athlete from Canyon Country, will graduate from College of the Canyons this June and has been hired as a wildland firefighter to help stop wildfires — she earned awards in track and basketball and will study fire protection at California State University, Los Angeles after wildfire season.  SCVNews.com
  • The Adult Skills Center will host a sports tournament on Friday, June 6 at Central Park (soccer field 11, 27150 Bouquet Canyon Road) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., where championships in soccer, basketball and kickball will be held and an awards ceremony will follow.  SCVNews.com
