  • Local residents heard a loud boom and saw a fiery streak on Saturday night when SpaceX's Dragon reentered Earth's atmosphere over the Santa Clarita Valley — the unpiloted spacecraft was set to splash down near Oceanside at 10:44 p.m. A SpaceX social media post and subsequent user reports confirmed the unusual event, which followed a cargo delivery mission to the space station.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • Mission Opera and Bella Cucina Italian Restaurant announced a new monthly event called Bella Notte that will begin this Fall in Santa Clarita. The event will offer Italian dining and live opera every third Saturday at 6:30 p.m.—tickets cost $85 per person with alcoholic drinks extra.  Hometown Station

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Santa Clarita native Kendall Fortner, 24, was one of six people killed when a private plane crashed into a San Diego neighborhood on Thursday.  Hometown Station
  • Four people—two adults and two children—were hospitalized after a severe crash involving a black pickup truck on northbound I-5 near Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic on May 25 at 1:06 p.m., with two children airlifted to Northridge as authorities continue investigating the cause.  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • On May 25th, 1966, the Mustang Drive-In opened on Soledad Canyon Road in historic Honby — now part of Canyon Country — and featured a double bill of Last of the Secret Agents? and Night of the Grizzly. It operated for nearly two decades before closing in 1984 and later hosted the city’s first temporary administrative headquarters.  Hometown Station

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Arthur Saginian argues that Chiquita Canyon Landfill must be declared a Superfund site so the EPA can investigate and clean up the hazardous waste (drawing on his 38 years as a mechanical engineer with the L.A.
