On May 24, 1860, Col. Thomas Finley Mitchell, a veteran of the Mexican-American War, came to Soledad Canyon to start his ranching work and support local education.
He later built a family home and worked with neighbors to launch a school that laid the foundation for the Sulphur Springs School District.

In 1966, Mustang Drive-In theater opened on Soledad Canyon Road—a key moment that shaped local movie culture in Santa Clarita.

Congressman Whitesides introduced an amendment to the budget that will exempt homes affected by the Chiquita Canyon Landfill from paying taxes on assistance they receive—he said the measure will ease the burden on local families.
The Rules Committee will discuss the bill in a meeting on Wednesday morning.

West Ranch High School senior Hunter Manning threw a no-hitter on Friday as his 81-pitch performance led his team to a 10-0 win over the Sultana Sultans and sent the Wildcats to the CIF Southern Section Division 2 semifinals.
The team will host the Etiwanda Eagles on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.—a win that capped a strong outing from several seniors.
