  • Volunteers are needed to help clear brush and plant growth from the Shadow Glen and Uncle Remi Trails in the SCV on Saturday, May 31—organizers are calling on the community to support trail maintenance efforts.  SCVNews.com

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A brush fire dubbed the Magic Fire broke out Friday afternoon near Valle Del Oro and Deputy Jake Drive in Newhall and was contained by firefighters by 12:45 p.m. (covering 0.5 acres) as crews cooled hot spots.  Hometown Station
  • A half-acre brush fire dubbed the Magic Incident broke out in Newhall at the intersection of Deputy Jake Drive and Valle Del Oro on May 23 and was quickly contained by firefighters after arriving at 12:32 p.m.—Michael McGrath Elementary was evacuated while no structures were threatened.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

CRIME NEWS

  • Three masked men attempted to burglarize a Stevenson Ranch home on Friday at about 11 a.m.—they fled in a black SUV with red running boards and remain at large, sheriff's deputies said.  Hometown Station

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College of the Canyons will honor its class of 2025 with its 56th commencement ceremony at Cougar Stadium (on the Valencia campus) on Friday, June 6, with keynote speaker Chris Schauble. Gates open at 5 p.m. and the ceremony begins at 6 p.m., so community members should plan ahead for parking.  SCVNews.com
  • Margaret Allgood Wurfel, 10 — a fourth-grade student at Meadows Elementary School — won the National Award of Excellence in Film Production from the PTA Reflections Program, a national competition with entries from across the country.  SCVNews.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The California Highway Patrol announced that its Memorial Day enforcement runs from Friday 6 p.m. to Monday 12 p.m.—officers will use both regular and low-profile patrol vehicles to watch for impaired driving and seatbelt and child seat violations. CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said the effort is meant to help keep drivers safe during the holiday weekend.  Hometown Station
  • The Santa Clarita City Council will meet in open session on Tuesday, May 27 at City Hall at 6 p.m. to consider a request from Burrtec Waste Industries to raise residential garbage pickup rates 14—25 percent because the company must now transport waste to Sun Valley after the Chiquita Canyon Landfill closed. The council will also hold a public hearing on proposed amendments to the MetroWalk Specific Plan that call for changes in housing types and setback rules for affordable senior units.  SCVNews.com

  • The Master's University women’s 4 x 800 relay team (Hannah Fredericks, Rebekah Niednagel, Suzie Johnson and Ellen Palmgren) finished second at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Marion, Ind with a program-record outdoor time of 9:03.98, trailing the University of British Columbia.
