  • The city invites residents to a ribbon cutting at David March Park on Monday, June 1 at 10 a.m. (28310 North Via Joyce Drive) to celebrate its expansion featuring a new baseball field, picnic pavilion, lighted basketball court, exercise staircase, improved parking and art installation honoring Deputy March.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • The SCV Sheriff’s Station hosts two community events Thursday: join deputies for Coffee with a Cop from 9 to 11 a.m. at San Fernando Coffee Company in Newhall and a Tip-A-Cop fundraiser for Special Olympics from 5 to 9 p.m. at Red Robin in Valencia—support local connections and athletes.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Newhallywood Silent Film Festival - celebrating early Hollywood with screenings, tours and induction ceremonies - runs from Friday, May 22 to Sunday, May 24 in Old Town Newhall. The festival begins at 8 p.m. on Friday at the Newhall Family Theatre.  SCVNews.com
  • On May 19, 1851, the Los Angeles Court of Sessions declared the main road through Rancho San Francisco a public highway—helping shape modern Santa Clarita Valley. The decision backed earlier efforts by the State Legislature to open more roads for popular use.  Hometown Station

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College of the Canyons will celebrate its first Bachelor of Science in Building Performance graduates on Friday, June 5. The 11 students, who completed a 120-unit program using advanced tools (BEM and BIM), will soon start careers in sustainable architecture.  Hometown Station
  • Teachers in the Saugus Union School District opposed hiring two special assignment teachers for social-emotional learning to address behavior challenges in favor of more classroom aides (survey showed strong opposition) at a May 5 board meeting.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Santa Clarita Valley Memorial Day Ceremony will honor fallen *U.S. Navy* and Armed Services members on Monday, May 25 at 10 a.m. at Eternal Valley Memorial Park and Mortuary. The event is a cherished SCV tradition to remember military sacrifice.  SCVNews.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Foothill League announced that Saugus’ Amelia Johnson earned player of the year and Hart’s Gabriella Kobliska was named pitcher of the year after the local softball season ended. Johnson helped lead the Centurions to a back-to-back league title.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • The All-Foothill League teams were released on May 19, with West Ranch’s Lauren Lamb named Player of the Year (her efforts led to a sixth straight league title) and Saugus’ Piper McGee earning Defensive Player of the Year honors.   • COC (College of the Canyons) sophomore Hazel Rhodes won her second consecutive 400m state title on Saturday with a time of 54.78 while teammate Monique Fulling finished second in the 400 hurdles at Mt. San Antonio College.  SCVNews.com
  • Valencia senior Dylan Murphy earned the player of the year award after leading the Vikings to a Foothill League title during the boys volleyball season.
