  • On May 14, Girl Scouts Brownie Troop 70572 planted over 70 fire-resistant plants on the Chuck Pontius Commuter Trail in Canyon Country to help reduce fire risks after January wildfires. The troop, supported by the city and groundskeeper Gustavo Ruiz—who taught the girls proper planting techniques—raised funds from cookie sales to cover the costs.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • Main Street Newhall hosted a spy-themed Senses Block Party on May 16th—featuring live music from Agent 18, a Nintendo 64 007 game, and family-friendly challenges. Local food trucks served favorites—and organizers announced a date night theme for next month’s party on June 19.  Hometown Station

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A semi-truck caught fire on the 5 Freeway in Newhall on Friday morning near Calgrove Boulevard—blocking lanes and delaying traffic until CHP said two lanes would reopen around 11 a.m.  Hometown Station

CRIME NEWS

  • A DUI suspect was arrested after a crash on Whites Canyon Road and Ashboro Drive in Canyon Country on Thursday at 11:35 p.m.—one person was taken to the hospital—authorities report.  Hometown Station
  • Ernest Urioste, a 62-year-old man from Woodland Hills, pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of sexual crimes against children that include abusing a 5-year-old victim and span from October 1994 to January 2019, and he may face life imprisonment if convicted.  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • The city presents its new art exhibit 'Beyond the Desk' at City Hall’s First Floor Gallery on view until August 20, featuring artwork by city staff and their families. A reception is planned for June 5 from 5-8 p.m. at City Hall — a chance to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments.  SCVNews.com

  • Ellie Sienna Song from West Ranch High School won first place for her digital art piece 'Flipped' in the 2025 Congressional Art Competition—her work will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol while other winning pieces are set to be shown in district offices.  SCVNews.com
  • On Wednesday, College of the Canyons employee leaders and college officials met to review last year’s climate survey and discuss plans to update board policy; the follow-up survey will help decide which areas of concern to address—officials said more action is needed to improve the campus culture.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

  • Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Assistant Sheriff Jason Skeen kicked off the 50th Annual Memorial Torch Relay Run on May 16 at the Hall of Justice in downtown Los Angeles to honor fallen officers, with nearly 2,000 runners covering more than 300 miles and passing the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station among 23 stops— the run will continue for three days and end at 4 p.m. on May 18 at the Altadena Sheriff’s Station.  SCVNews.com
