  • Finally Family Homes—based in Santa Clarita—was chosen as one of eight winners of the Aging Out Institute Awards Program on May 13 and received the Flame Award with a $40,000 grant to expand its housing support and life skills services for youth aging out of foster care.  Hometown Station
  • Henry Mayo Newhall (town founder) was born in Saugus, Massachusetts on May 13th, 1825. His 1875 purchase of a bankrupt rancho helped form the modern Santa Clarita Valley, with his name seen on schools, parks, and other local sites.  Hometown Station
  • After the Los Angeles County Superior Court accepted the petition in probate court, Santa Clarita will take ownership of historic William S. Hart Park with plans to begin operations on July 1. The nearly 160-acre park in Newhall—its last remaining county-owned park—will honor Hart’s will as it prepares to serve the community.  Hometown Station

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 13th, a sergeant on patrol near closed businesses on Golden Valley Road in Canyon Country observed a white Ford Transit van with out-of-state plates, and when he approached, 36-year-old Ellis Laughter from Tennessee—who failed field sobriety tests—was arrested on multiple drug, DUI, and weapons charges after officers found loaded firearms including an assault rifle.  Hometown Station

  • Los Angeles County backed two bills by Assemblywoman Pilar Schiavo to address noxious odors from the Chiquita Canyon Landfill — with 5th District Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who signed a consent calendar motion passed Tuesday — and the measures include tax relief for nearby residents and new safety protocols aimed at helping those with reported migraines and breathing issues.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The College of the Canyons Cougars won their second straight state championship and 12th title overall at the 3C2A Men's Golf State Championships—held at Bayonet Golf Course—beating Reedley College by three shots.  SCVNews.com
  • After the regular season ended, eleven Santa Clarita Valley teams will enter CIF baseball and softball playoffs starting Thursday and Friday. In baseball, West Ranch will face Palm Desert and Hart will host Cajon at 3:15 p.m. Thursday while Saugus will host Wiseburn Da Vinci on Friday, Castaic will meet Paloma Valley on Thursday at 3:15 p.m., Valencia will host Northview on Friday, and Trinity will face Don Lugo at 4:15 p.m. Friday — in softball, Saugus, Valencia, Hart and Santa Clarita Christian School will compete in games set for Thursday at 3:15 p.m.  Hometown Station
