CULTURE NEWS

  • The Santa Clarita Film Office announced six productions will film in the valley from May 5 to May 10, including the procedural drama 9-1-1 and the feature Son of the 11th Hr. Other projects include a Hyundai commercial, the Step Inside project and internet series Mr Ex and Chilis—details on these are still limited.  Hometown Station
  • Santa Clarita Transit has launched an artwork competition to create a limited-edition TAP card that honors the city’s Zero-Emission Initiative. Local artists must submit an original design by Saturday, June 14 — winners will receive a $200 stipend and their work will appear on the first TAP card issued later this year.  SCVNews.com

  • The Castaic Union School District board is meeting today at 6 p.m. (at 28131 Livingston Ave) to discuss the transportation changes after staff shortages ended home-to-school bus service for general education students. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a pilot program that lets licensed professionals self-certify home rebuild plans in unincorporated areas hit by January wildfires, a move to speed up recovery after over 16,000 structures were damaged. The Department of Public Works will design and implement the program and report back in 120 days — while the county chief executive officer submits a feasibility report on waiving permit fees in 30 days.  SCVNews.com
  • Assemblywoman Pilar Schiavo advanced the Chiquita Canyon Tax Relief Act on May 6 at 9:30 a.m. from the Assembly Committee on Revenue and Taxation— the bill exempts disaster compensation from state taxes for residents impacted by the Chiquita Canyon Landfill incident in places like Val Verde, Castaic, and Santa Clarita and will next move to the Assembly Appropriations Committee for a full vote.  Hometown Station

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has declared a community-wide hepatitis A outbreak after finding a rise in cases and increased virus levels in wastewater - 29 cases this year have been confirmed mostly among people without travel or housing risks. Residents are urged to get vaccinated and wash their hands regularly to help slow the spread.  SCVNews.com

  • Four TMU beach volleyball players were named NAIA First Team All-Americans after a season in which top pairs Annika Gudnason and Evi Roberts along with Faith Wada and Zoe Yates earned national honors — helping the team reach its first NAIA National Championship tournament appearance. Violet Avila and Grace Colburn also received the AVCA Top Flight Award after winning over 75% of their matches.  SCVNews.com
  • No. 14 College of the Canyons softball team was eliminated from the postseason after losing two games at No. 3 Palomar College on May 2nd and 3rd; they lost (8-0) in the first game and (7-3) in the second. Palomar will play No. 6 Cerritos College in the next round.  SCVNews.com
  • College of the Canyons men’s golf won the 3C2A Southern California Regional Championship on May 5 at Los Serranos Country Club—finishing with a team score of 719 and extending its win streak to seven events.
