  • Jill Cox of Jill’s Cake Creations retired after 47 years at Sunday’s Taste of the Town event on May 4 at Blomgren Ranch and turned the business over to her brothers Tony and Frank Nigro. The sold-out event raised funds for the local Child and Family Center—drawing 800 to 900 guests and support from community leaders and vendors.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • At a dinner gala on May 2nd at the Hyatt Regency Valencia, Josh Rivas was named 2025 Santa Clarita Valley Man of the Year—he led SIGSCV events during the pandemic—and Jackie Hartmann, a volunteer with the SCV Senior Center and Meals on Wheels, was named Woman of the Year.  SCVNews.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • College of the Canyons will host the second annual Santa Clarita Valley Book Festival on Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center featuring over 80 local authors, literary workshops, live music + a taco truck, with free admission + free campus parking.  Hometown Station
  • Saugus High School’s spring play Hadestown opens tomorrow at The Forum and will run through Sunday with performances at 7:00 p.m. on May 7, 8, 9, and 10, at 2:00 p.m. on May 10, and at 6:30 p.m. on May 11. ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Santa Clarita Film Office released a list of six productions filming in the Santa Clarita Valley this week from May 5 to May 10—these include online content, feature films, TV shows and commercials. The filming supports local business spending and tax revenue that benefits roads, schools and public safety.  SCVNews.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Suzette Martinez Valladares said that new SCAQMD rules will force Santa Clarita residents to pay extra for expensive all-electric appliances or to pay a fee of about $1,500 to keep using natural gas, which may also require costly electric panel upgrades—adding strain to home budgets and the electric grid. She warned that these changes could hurt affordability and urged a NO vote on the measures—emphasizing that households face rising costs and reliability issues.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

SPORTS NEWS

  • College of the Canyons track team had eight Cougars qualify for the 3C2A Southern California Regional Championships on May 3, including standout athletes Hazel Rhodes and Monique Fulling. The student-athletes will compete at the finals starting at 10:30 a.m. May 10 plus then move on to the state championships on May 16-17.  SCVNews.com
  • The Master’s University men’s volleyball team won the NAIA National Championship on May 3 by defeating St. Xavier in four sets, finishing the season undefeated at 27-0. The team is set to bring the trophy to Santa Clarita and Braden Van Groningen was named the tournament MVP.  SCVNews.com
