  • Santa Clarita hosts free events this week: the Relay For Life at Central Park on May 2, 9am to 9pm; Food & Wine Fest at SoCal Innovation Park on May 3, 1pm to 5pm; and FestAbility at West Creek Park on May 3, 12pm to 3pm.  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dig Deep Theatre and Theatre Extempore team up for the first time to present Kenneth Lonergan’s coming-of-age play “This Is Our Youth” at The Olive Branch in Valencia starting May 8. The production offers a live look at a classic New York tale of young adults facing life’s turning points.  SCVNews.com
  • On April 29, 1944, the black-and-white Western film Outlaw Trail was released to the public in Santa Clarita. Filmed at the Monogram movie ranch in Placerita Canyon — later renamed Melody Ranch — it marks an early piece of local film history.  Hometown Station

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The William S. Hart School District celebrated 80 years of educating local students on April 29 at a State of the District event in Santa Clarita. Leaders and community members reflected on past success & discussed future plans to expand educational programs.  Hometown Station
  • College of the Canyons is accepting summer registration for over 590 courses across four sessions from June 8 to Aug. 15 at the Valencia & Canyon Country campuses plus online. High school students can earn credit with waived fees, while other students pay $46 per unit.  SCVNews.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of Deputy Sheriff David March’s death on April 29, 2002; local deputies hold a 24-hour vigil at the memorial site (the park named for him) to honor his service.  Hometown Station
  • SCV Water completed a $17.8 million PFAS and VOC treatment project at the Rio Vista Intake Pump Station Wednesday, restoring five wells to safely provide 3,450 gallons per minute for Santa Clarita. The project will boost local water reliability + reduce reliance on imported supplies.  Hometown Station

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local lacrosse playoffs moved forward as the Saugus girls edged Culver City 18-17 and the Valencia girls defeated Heritage 17-7, advancing to second-round matches today at 5 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively while local boys teams begin postseason play soon.  Hometown Station
  • After defeating Hart Tuesday afternoon for a 6-2 win and remaining unbeaten (10-0) in Foothill League play, Saugus Softball will take on Golden Valley at 3:15 p.m. today as key run-makers Olivia Frias, Savanna Smith, and Tatum Kurowski led the win.  Hometown Station
