  • Local community members have rallied to preserve the historic Santa Clarita Elementary school site in Saugus as a potential community center. CRIME NEWS

  • Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department asked for help finding 87-year-old Mary Hellen Paigen, last seen on Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. in Canyon Country (at the 18100 block of Sundowner Way) while wearing a blue Christmas sweater and believed to be driving her 2001 Toyota Camry.  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • John Boston, a local historian and columnist for The Signal, will host a presentation at Rancho Camulos Museum in Piru on Sunday at noon. Guests can bring a picnic (with guided tours available) and are encouraged to donate $10 at the door or in advance.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

  • A Los Angeles-based developer proposed 100 assisted-living units for seniors on Tourney Road, across from Kaiser Permanente and next to Valencia Country Club.   • Cara McKell became the all-time leading scorer for Valencia with 1,919 points in the CIF-SS Division 1 playoff win over Mira Costa on Saturday, scoring 30 points to help the Vikings win 81-56 and advance to the quarterfinals.  Hometown Station
  • College of the Canyons baseball club hit six home runs to record a season-high run total in its 16-7 win against Allan Hancock College at Mike Gillespie Field on Tuesday, Feb. 10.  SCVNews.com
  • Saugus boys fell 60-54 to Trabuco Hills in the CIF playoffs on Monday, Feb. 16 at their home court; senior Braydon Harmon reached 1,000 career points with 15 points and seven rebounds before halftime.   • Canyon’s girls basketball team advanced to the CIF-SS Division 3 quarterfinals with a 54-39 win over Wiseburn-Da Vinci on Saturday and will host St. Margaret’s on Wednesday at 7 p.m.- Shannen Wilson scored 22 points while Darby Dunn became the first local sophomore to reach 1,000 career points.  Hometown Station
  • TMU women's basketball ended the season strong on Saturday, Feb. 14 when senior Alli VanKooten (20 points and a career-high 19 rebounds) helped the Mustangs beat ACU 77 to 48 at The MacArthur Center in her final regular season game.  SCVNews.com
