- ➤ Santa Clarita Public Library Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy Branch (18601 Soledad Canyon Rd) will host the PAWS for Love Adoption Event on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. City officials and Castaic Animal Care Center say adoption fees will be waived in honor of Valentine’s Day, with adopters paying only the licensing fee. - ➤ Illegally dumped chickens found in Acton last November tested positive for ILT, a contagious avian disease that affects older birds, and county animal control removed nearly 60 birds and 15 feed bags near Crown Valley Church off Sierra Highway & Avenue V to prevent further spread. - ➤ On Feb. 4, 1850, survivors of the Jayhawkers of '49 (who endured extreme heat and scarce supplies) emerged from Death Valley into Rancho San Francisco near Newhall, later celebrating their newfound safety with a local feast.
