COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents can register for the city’s free document shredding and carpet recycling drop-off event in Canyon Country on Saturday, Mar. 7 from 9 a.m. to noon.  SCVNews.com
  • Local nonprofit Finally Family Homes hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday to unveil its new Oasis Resource Center at 23120 Lyons Avenue, offering food, hygiene items and connection with caring adults for young adults in need. The center is open Tuesday through Friday and welcomes volunteers ages 14 and up.  Hometown Station
  • Relay For Life of the Santa Clarita Valley won several Spirit of Relay Awards for its work supporting cancer research and community programs. The group will host its family-friendly fundraiser at Central Park on May 2nd at 9 a.m. with free admission for registered participants.  Hometown Station
  • College of the Canyons will offer free tax preparation through its VITA program (for those earning under $68,675, persons with disabilities, and individuals with limited English proficiency) every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hasley Hall, Rooms 233 and 234 from Feb. 7 to April 11.  Hometown Station

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Jan. 29, a fatal crash on I-70 in Colorado involved a sprinter van carrying Santa Clarita Flyers team members when it collided with a snow plow, killing the driver and injuring eight people.  SCVNews.com

  • Students ages 12-18 can submit artwork, poetry, essays, photos or music to Santa Clarita's Young Artists and Authors Showcase (organized with Sister Cities) themed 'Voices of Today, Visions of Tomorrow.' Entries are due online by Friday, Mar. 13 for a chance to win a $1,000 prize in each category.  SCVNews.com
  • Santa Clarita’s arts scene offers creative events for all, with the Travel and Adventure exhibit at City Hall until Mar. 4 (featuring exploration themes), wildlife art at Old Town Newhall Library starting today, and a new augmented reality experience on Main Street celebrating Western heritage.  SCVNews.com

  • Old Town Newhall Public Library will host a Learn and Launch Robotics class from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2 (at 24500 Main St.) in Newhall.  SCVNews.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A baby mountain lion found in Castaic was moved on Thursday to a wildlife rehabilitation center in northern California after biologists could not locate its mother.   • TMU men's basketball beat Benedictine Mesa 92-86 at The MacArthur Center on Saturday, Jan. 24 (Avery Jackson led with 25 points) and secured a 1.5 game lead in the GSAC standings.  SCVNews.com
  • Girls basketball action today saw Valencia secure a 94-16 win over Castaic — keeping its unbeaten record in the Foothill League — while Trinity earned a 68-18 victory over Faith Baptist to lead the Heritage League at 5-0. Other contests are scheduled later this week.  Hometown Station
  • The Master’s University men’s volleyball team rebounded after a tough first set and beat Concordia University Irvine in four sets on Wednesday, Jan. 28, in Irvine. Isaac Seltzer led with 16 kills and the Mustangs improved to a 3-0 record; they will rematch on Saturday, Jan. 31.  SCVNews.com
