  • Santa Clarita has multiple community events this week. Join Blue Star Mothers for their Chapter Meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20 from 7 – 9 p.m. at 23681 Newhall Ave. #7 and enjoy Mission Opera’s Bella Notte on Saturday, Jan. 17 at Bella Cucina Italian Restaurant; additional local programs continue throughout the week.  Hometown Station
  • Santa Clarita will host its fifth annual MLK Day Unity Walk Monday at 9 a.m. in Central Park (27150 Bouquet Canyon Road) with Mayor Laurene Weste opening remarks, local youth performances, and student speakers offering insights as participants donate essential items to Bridge to Home.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley is hosting a screening of the documentary 'Embrace' about body positivity on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. at Canyon Theatre Guild in Newhall, followed by a panel discussion with health experts (tickets start at $25 for students and $40 for general admission).  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • Ken Ham and Ray Comfort will speak at a free event hosted by The Master’s University as part of the Gospel Reset tour at Placerita Bible Church on Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. (tickets must be reserved in advance) and the talk will also be livestreamed at masters.edu/live.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College of the Canyons’ Rising Scholars program won the 2025-26 Exemplary Program Award at a Jan. 13 meeting in Sacramento — recognizing its support for justice-impacted students. The program has provided academic and vocational training to over 7,290 students since its 2015 launch.  Hometown Station
  • Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6885 in Canyon Country selected 12-year-old Ava Hutton of Oaks Christian School as the local Patriots Pen Essay Contest winner and awarded her a $250 check. She will advance to the state-level contest in Sacramento later this month.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • The Newhall School District recognized January as School Board Member month after its governing board unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at the district office, thanking board members for their commitment to student success (the resolution underlines their teamwork in supporting tailored education).  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Jan. 14, 1988, Santa Clarita's City Council formed its Planning Commission at William S. Hart High School by appointing five members, establishing guidelines that still shape local government today.  Hometown Station

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Master’s University will host its annual Winter 5K on Saturday in Placerita Canyon and Quigley Canyon Open Space, offering three brackets including a Kids 1K, a Run/Walk, and a 5K Challenge (designed for faster runners).   • Valencia girls’ basketball beat Golden Valley 77-11 at home + ended the first half of the Foothill League season unbeaten after a loss to Corona Centennial.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
