  • SCV Water launches its Gardening Club to offer a year-long series of expert-led workshops on water-wise landscaping; the club kicks off with an in-person session on Saturday, Jan. 31 from 9 to 11 a.m. at 23780 Pine Street in Newhall and registration is now open.  Hometown Station
  • Ken Ham and Ray Comfort will speak at a free event hosted by The Master’s University as part of the Answers in Genesis Gospel Reset at Placerita Bible Church on Jan. 23, and advance ticket reservations are required.  Hometown Station

CULTURE NEWS

  • On January 8, 1869, local entrepreneurs Henry Clay Wiley, Sanford Lyon and William W. Jenkins began drilling the first oil well in Pico Canyon, sparking Santa Clarita’s early role in California's oil industry.  Hometown Station
  • Santa Clarita native Austin Kolodney saw his film poster for Dead Man’s Wire (a crime thriller) at Regal Edwards Valencia on Jan. 2 and included local Easter eggs in the dialogue to honor his hometown. The film is now in theaters nationwide.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • Canyon Theatre Guild will show Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific on Saturdays from Jan. 24 to Feb. 22, arranged with R & H Theatricals. Local audiences can enjoy this classic musical in a community setting.  SCVNews.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SCV GSA held a virtual update Wednesday on groundwater monitoring in the valley — calling for volunteer well owners; it will host a Feb. 4 meeting at 26521 Summit Circle to update its sustainability plan.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal

SPORTS NEWS

  • William Jones Jr. of the Castaic girls flag football program was named CIF Southern Section Girls Flag Football Coach of the Year by the Los Angeles Rams after his team’s inaugural season ended. The award includes a $4,000 check to help purchase uniforms, footballs & equipment.  Hometown Station
  • The Castaic Coyotes bounced back Wednesday with a 49-18 win at home over Lakeview Charter, led by freshman guard Charlotte Wheeler who scored 26 points. Coach Jared Dacey said the win builds momentum + the team prepares for Friday’s game with the Hart Hawks.  The Santa Clarita Valley Signal
  • Valencia, undefeated in the Foothill League, will host Canyon today at 5 p.m. after a dominant win, while Saugus faces Golden Valley and Castaic plays Hart today in key matchups poised to shift league standings.  Hometown Station
