About this event

Join us for a FREE 90-minute virtual professional development workshop designed for educators, where we will explore the rich cultural, religious, and social tapestry of Jewish life across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East prior to the Holocaust.

Through the story of Holocaust survivor Joseph Samuels, participants will examine how Jewish communities flourished in Iraq for more than 2,000 years before the rise of Nazism and the Farhud, and how the mass exodus of Iraqi Jews led to the near disappearance of one of the world's oldest Jewish communities. Using primary sources, survivor testimony, historical photographs, and personal narratives, educators will gain strategies for teaching about the diversity of Jewish experiences before, during, and after the Holocaust.

The workshop will conclude with a live Q&A featuring Holocaust survivor and author Joseph Samuels, who will share his experiences growing up in Baghdad and answer participants' questions.

A $50 stipend is available for current California teachers.
