About this event

The dissertation and final DMA recital curated by harpist Jillian Risigari-Gai will focus on the life and works of composer Alfredo Rolando Ortiz. It will explore how his compositions have continued the lineage of "Transculturality," a conceptual framework describing the blending, fluid interaction, and transformation of cultures as they encounter one another. Unlike multiculturalism, which often views distinct cultures as existing side by side, transculturality emphasizes how globalization, migration, and communication break down traditional cultural boundaries, creating new, shared, and continuously evolving cultural identities. Through research, oral history interviews, and performance, the project will closely examine how Paraguayan harp techniques and performance practices inform and expand the possibilities of the double-action pedal harp through Alfredo Rolando Ortiz’s South American Suite for Harp and Orchestra.
